Separation can be one of the most challenging times for children and parents alike. The changes in family living arrangements often disrupt routines, attachments and a sense of stability for children.

The booklet Share ال Care: الأبوة والأمومة Plan – Collaborative Parenting Apart is a practical, accessible guide for separating parents navigating these challenges.

It offers a roadmap to build a customised written plan for how children will be supported, cared for and connected – now and as their lives evolve.

Share the Care is comprehensive yet practical.

  • About parenting plans: Explains what a parenting plan is, what it is not, and how it differs from a legally enforceable order.
  • Communication: Offers guidance on how separated parents can إنشاء respectful communication channels (phone, text, email), agree on shared values/culture, and avoid putting children in the middle.
  • Living arrangements: Helps parents think through how children will spend time with each parent, how transitions between households can be gentler, and how to handle special days/holidays.

The Book Club Storybook - The Kids Who Have Been Through This

Stories from children who have experienced homelessness and domestic violence

About the Book Club Project

The Together 4 Kids (T4K) Book Club Project brought together children and parents of toddlers and babies who are former T4K clients, to write and illustrate a children’s story, drawing on their experiences of homelessness and domestic violence.  

The project was developed in response to the announcement of the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence in South Australia, to give children a voice that can be heard by decision makers, and to give hope to other children going through similar experiences.  

About the Process

The children and families attended a series of workshops designed by T4K practitioners that were focused on building relationships and the power of storytelling.  

At the workshops, they explored themes of place, emotions, relationships and safety using native Australian animals as their characters and developing stories using art and craft, role play and nature play.  

The Book Club authors worked together to make decisions about the story lines, characters, and illustrations, using problem solving skills and teamwork and building on each other’s ideas.  

We engaged specialist children’s education organisation, Kids Thrive,  to help develop the children’s messages for change in story book form. This resulted in the wonderful eagle poems, and the use of an illustrator for the story Mumma Roo to bring to life the toddler experience.  

The stories and illustrations were then brought together to create The Kids Who Have Been Through This, stories from children who have experienced homelessness and domestic violence.  

The Book Launch

The Kids Who Have Been Through This was launched on 18 June 2025 at a special ceremony in the playground at Relationships Australia SA’s Hindmarsh site.  

At the event, the young authors shared their stories in front of decision makers in government, and other dignitaries and representatives from the domestic and family violence sector – ensuring their voices were not only heard but recognised as powerful calls for change.  

They hope their stories will help other children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence to know they’re not alone.
