Gambling Harm Awareness Week

Online betting, new resources available

‘Responsible Gambling Awareness Week’ is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about gambling harm while engaging with the wider community. This year’s theme focused on ‘online betting’.

An animation video called ‘Winning?’ was created with this theme in mind and is now available. This animation shows the internal battle that goes on when someone is trying to move away from their gambling problems. It shows a young man ‘win’ at life by keeping the things that matter most by moving away from gambling harm addiction.

Another animation was created by the PEACE team which is aimed for reaching 18 to 25-year-old men about the potential dangers of online sports betting, depicted by the analogy a of a fish who gets ‘hooked’. The animation takes the viewer through the journey of getting ‘hooked’ to gambling, loosing friends, money, and a sense of well-being. But in the end, the audience is shown useful help seeking behaviour and how to access support themselves.

The Big Fish was created in 2018 and has been translated into 12 different languages; Farsi, French, Khmer, Punjabi, Pushtu, Urdu, Hindi, Swahili, Arabic, Dari, Filipino and Greek.

An educational resource for educators and anyone working with young people was also created which features short activities, handouts and tips.
