The 18th of July marks the 5th Anniversary of the South Australian Governments Apology for Forced Adoption Practices.
The apology was delivered by the former Premier Jay Weatherill, followed by speeches by other parliamentarians. South Australia was the second state to make a formal Apology to those affected by forced adoption, and other state and federal government apologies followed soon after.
These apologies have been important in bringing to light the complexities of adoption, and the impact that past practices had, and continue to have, on many individuals and families.
