The Family - Living Between Two Worlds
About the Show
There’s nothing special about the Cardamone's, a second-generation Italian migrant family living on the outskirts of Melbourne, except for one thing: they were brave enough to allow 35 remote controlled cameras into their home to capture their every move, day and night, in every room of the house for 100 days. The result is a portrayal of families in Australia today and a raw view of the dynamics and universal themes of family life.
The Family focuses on mum and dad (Josie and Angelo) and their three teenage sons as well as their two widowed mothers. The Cardemones have all the hassles of raising teenage boys and of straddling the traditional Italian world of their mothers as well as the modern Australian world in which their sons live and operate. There are programs that show particular events in the family’s life – for example, Josie’s 50th birthday, and their Christmas celebrations, as well as other more difficult issues, such as Stephan – the middle son’s – performance in the HSC exams and his parents’ views about his future career/education choices.
SBS Radio will invite listeners from all backgrounds to join in the discussion about the modern Australian family in a series of talkback programs. SBS Radio listeners will share their own experiences of what it’s like to navigate life in a multigenerational multicultural family.
SBS Online will feature Catch Up, deleted scenes, in-depth interviews with the Cardamones as well as expert discussion that will resonate with all modern Australian families.
